I was told by a private pilot that the issue with cell phones has more to do with the FCC.  When a phone Is up in the air it communicates with multiple towers at once, thereby clogging the system.  It makes sense, and AFAIK, airplanes use radio communication,  not cellular.  The two should not interfere.
