The letter of the contract might let them change whatever they want whenever they want, but the judge might disagree. Not a good faith increase.
I would put money down that someone starts a law suit

If you book now and need to do a date change and or an airline change could you stay at the same price for either of those changes? I would imagine the former at least has a chance.

Of course!
The price for coach is virtually the same. Are bought miles used more for Business than coach?

I haven't been around for other devals, but is it likely that UA points will be worth more temporarily?

After all, anyone with UA is using up all their points for themselves before the devaluation, it could create a temporary lack of UA points for the buyers. Additionally, much less people will be accruing UA points...

Yes, within the year.

Many flaws in this theory.
1. More people will be trying to get rid of their miles before the price really goes down after the devaluation takes effect.
2. Buyers will be scared of not being able to use the miles b4 the devaluation takes effect, and won't stock up.

not if you change it. Chances are if you change they wil try and charge you the new mileage rate.

@Baruch

I took those facts into account when stating my theory. I believe that the factors I stated will have more of an effect.

Of course, I'm an amateur in these things so could be I'm just a victim of wishful thinking.

I want to fly jfk fra nrt on lh f may 2014, what would be the best way, since lh releases f awards only days before departure? And I want to book an award before the devaluation, I don't mind paying a date change fee or some sort of re route fee..

There's always a good part in bad news: United finally realized that their partners have much better products.
