Very inspirational . If and when I can contemplate something like this for DW and I at our age ,
I will refer back to this and enlist whoever is willing to help me muck thru the routing .

Now are the Hotels the easy part ?

They are for connection purposes, but not for change-fee purposes of O/D.

Thus, changing EWR-ORD-NRT to JFK-ORD-NRT would equal change fee whereas LHR-JFK-LAX to LHR-EWR-ORD-LAX would not equal change fee.
so maybe add a throwaway from Tokyo with long enough stop that you can ask for the luggage in Tokyo and then hnd/nrt are layovers not the destination

Yeah, but it looks (and is) much more direct... just thought I'd throw it out there.

What's the total travel time difference?

Flight time or total travel time?

Very hard to figure out considering changing time zones, etc.

Umm, I'm sure you can figure out addition and subtraction.

Option 1. You can add a poll for it and I will bet that it that Option 1 will crush Option 2.  ::) :)

Just figured out the easy way to do it (by converting arrival time at ultimate destination to the current time at departure city).

Anyway, option 1 would be... Leaving JFK on Sunday, overnighting in LAX and then arriving in SYD at the equivalent of 6:30 PM Thursday night NYC time. That seems like a lot, even for me. (Unless I break up the trip by perhaps touring NRT or DPS a bit more...)

Option 2 would be leaving JFK on Monday night, spending Tuesday in LHR and arriving in SYD at the equivalent of 3:30 PM Wednesday afternoon NYC time.

LAX > LHR :)

Plus the option to sneak in some DPS touring.

I guess.

It gets a lot tougher if I am able to move my SFO-HND flight a day earlier, than for the first option I'd land in SYD the equivalent of Wednesday evening at 6:30 PM NYC time.

As currently constructed, option 2 is a no brainer to me (depending on your perspective I'm either the outlier or the voice of reason on these forums)

What about getting LAX-NRT or JFK-NRT and forgetting  about connecting on the west coast, assuming seats open?

Option 1 (and what is currently booked):

AA F A321 T
JL F
GA F
GA J

Option 2:

AA J
QF F x2

On account of the glut of new AA F availability, I just held the second one above, except that the first leg is now in AA F on 77W.

I'm leaning towards doing that as it's a much more seamless way to get to SYD.

...and there was a schedule change on the first outbound allowing me to cancel it for free.
