Assuming the card is nonrefundable like most of them are, they would issue a replacement card for the remaining value minus a fee. That's what they did when I dropped mine.

Amex offers had a 100 off 500 deal at the end of the year  last year, so i prefunded my reservation at the waldorf jlem (on both me and my wifes cards) 525 a piece.
no credit came up, and i finally got an answer tonight, it only applied to US hotels! i kinda feel like i knew that, but on dec 29 i just got crazy and tried to grab it...
really just lost out on some points (using plat instead of a multiple points for hotels card), but also time wasted filling out payment forms.

I bought $275 in Amazon Gift cards from Best Buy to get the PP $25 discount and the AmEx $25 offer. I didn't add all the cards to my account. (I wasn't sure if I wanted to use it on mine/my wife's account).
A $100 gift card got destroyed in the washer/dryer.(they're paper with a thin plastic coating, Walmart's are solid plastic)

Booked a business ticket using points on a Amex consumer plat instead of BP, (luckily) realized within 24 hours, cancelled. But now I'm going to have to fight with them to convert the refund back to MR. :/
