I didn't cancel my United card before the renewal date bec I was taking an international trip with United within the 2 month grace period.
Came back crazy Jet lagged. And forgot to call to cancel.  Remembered 2 Days too late!
Hucad a bunch of times.  Sent messages,  no way to get the 395 back.
What's real annoying is that at the last minute they canceled the United flight and switched us to a Diff airline.  Couldn't take more then one bag,  no lounge with unplanned stopover.
Only reason I even kept it open was for the benefits.
I got some measly points as compensation

I thought I told you I was expecting a Christmas gift

I lost a temp MVD that I registered, but for some reason it never loaded the permanent card. Thankfully after many, many phone calls I recovered the $500.

A month later I lost a $500 GC, again, it took many, many phone calls to recover. Though by the time I recovered it I had $471 left. Lost $29 but still happy to get the rest.

I think by now I learned my lesson.

Sure, keep a spread sheet of all opened cards when you need to spend on them, of all travel vouchers, and anything else reward related that has an expiration date.

I never bothered as I'm generally very on top of things, but I got busy for a few months and now I lost for lack of that spreadsheet.

It's hard to equate losing miles and vouchers with money though, as in the past week I also got $2,300 in points, so easy come easy go I guess? Still no excuse to lose easy money that can be converted to cash if need be.
