In Israel the concept of packaged baked goods practically doesn't exist. There are bakeries everywhere where you can find a thousand types of challa every Friday. Everything is abundant and just so fresh. Great bakeries include Berman's and Chaba by the shuk, Angels (because it's open 24/6), Meafeh Neeman, Marzipan, English Cake, the list goes on and on.

I also noticed that the bread in restaurants is so much better than its US counterparts.

Ps. Regarding butterflake in teaneck, it is really amazing but it isn't cholov Yisroel.
Visibly Jewish

yuck! and the person who says brooklyn bake shop is good should be kicked off ddf... its the worst here in IL.

there are no good bakeries here in general. theres avichayil for bagels, but otherwise not much!
in america Ragalach in monsey is delicious.
Avichayil rugalach are out of this world.

France I was not impressed with at all. It was actually the biggest letdown of my Paris trip. All the baked goods I could find  were pareve. I was hoping for buttery croissants.

Did you read my 2012 CDG trip notes?
There are at least 2 excellent dairy bakeries in the 19th, Chez Akol and Boulanger Bio.
Don't blame Paris for your bad research.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

A Bakery in the Geulah section of Jerusalem

For some reason some Americans go crazy for it but imho it gets a B rating at best, compared to american bakeries.

In my opinion many bakeries in Israel taste the same.  They do have some great rugelach etc .

Why would anyone eat packaged challah? Unless you're on vacation or something ...

Very good bakery. But I don't think the best.
The cookies are chewy style...sometimes I feel they are undercooked. Challahs are really good though.

For my fav as a prev commenter mentions I would go with butterflake in teaneck nj

My CDG trip was before I was a DDFer.

We actually wanted to get to ChezAkol (play on the bracha BTW) because we heard that was the only place to get dairy pastries, but didn't make it there. I guess I have another excuse to go back.

The disappointing bakeries were in Le Marais and in the Rue Richer area.

On a side note, The 19th was the only place I actually felt a little uncomfortable just walking around as a Jew. Did anyone else feel that?
I remember when a coke was a nickel, and you could buy VRs in OD.

Yea, but for clients they have very nice packaging...

Agreed, Challah is amazing too --try something called a "butter-crust pull-a-part challah"...amazing

I'm glad this thread materialized out of my kvetching. A bakery wiki would be a wonderful thing.
