America's Bakeries
« on: November 11, 2013, 11:24:10 AM »
Why doesn't America have any decent kosher baked goods? Bakery everywhere else is much better.

I remember when a coke was a nickel, and you could buy VRs in OD.

Disagree.
Been to Delice in LA?  French inspired bakery.
Try the donuts from Ungers in CLE or Cafe Elite in LA?
Chocolate Kokush from Gombos in NYC?
Blueberry muffins from Shemtov's in MIA or the ones carried by Second Cup in YYZ?
Cheese danishes from Zeman's in DTW or from Shwartz in LA?

Every bakery has those same yellow cookies and gross seven layer cake. The rugalach are dry and tasteless. All the cakes have a nasty chemical flavor to them.

Butterflake in Teaneck NJ is top notch. I brought some non Jewish coworkers there and they were raving about how good the stuff there was.

I'm discussing the general sorry state of affairs in NYC, where there are so many bakeries and most of them stink. You called out one item from one bakery as being good over there.

By contrast, go around in Israel and most of the bakeries have delicious pastries. Restaurants in NYC actually import cakes from Israel. That speaks to the great difference between the kosher bakeries in NYC vs. other places in the world.

I wasn't that impressed with Israeli bakeries.

Now the bakeries in Argentina, Brazil, and France are more exciting.

France I was not impressed with at all. It was actually the biggest letdown of my Paris trip. All the baked goods I could find  were pareve. I was hoping for buttery croissants.

In Mexico the baked goods were amazing. It just made me upset how bad the stuff from home was.
