I was thinking of creating a "DDF Wreck Room" thread, in which DDFers can vent their frustration by screaming and breaking things (virtually). This could come in handy after the elections next week.

But I decided that this thread already serves that purpose.

Oh. So you’re wondering why no singer wants your compositions? That’s simple. Because you don’t know how to compose. Whoa, calm down. I didn’t mean to insult you, I was just trying to say that your songs aren’t good enough. Whadda you mean that they’re “top top” songs? You can’t be the judge of your own songs. Oh, so you’re saying that all your friends told you that they’re amazing songs? Well, what would you tell your friend if he asked you for your opinion on his song – that it’s garbage?!? No. You would tell him that it’s good even if it wasn’t. So why do you expect any different from them? Oh, so random strangers also told you that it’s good? Big deal! Most random strangers will be nice and just say it’s good, or they just won’t have the patience to confront you with the truth. Hey, what was that you just said? Something about guys who aren’t music professionals? Oh, so some people tell you that your stuff is bad, but they don’t know music? That sounds so silly. You probably think that they don’t know music precisely because they don’t like your songs. And besides, singers don’t want songs that appeal only to musical geniuses. They want songs that appeal to everyone, even guys who “don’t know” music.
What’s that you say? Oh, singers don’t even want to listen to your songs? That’s understandable. There’s hundreds of novices out there composing songs and no one has the time and energy to sift through all that garbage. Oh, so you’re better? Let’s say that’s true, but how should he know that?
Oh, so now you ask why the few singers who were nice enough to listen to your stuff don’t want any songs? Maybe because they’re just not good? Chill, Ok, OK, I HEAR YOU. You don’t have to shout. Fine, they’re great songs. There’s still no reason they should take them. Wait wait. Let me finish what I was saying before you interrupt. Even if they are excellent songs, you’re still not a famous guy. And a lot more people will buy a CD if it says on it that the songs were composed by a brand-name composer. Ah, so you don’t like my answer? You know what!?! I’ll tell you what!! Why in the world should the SINGER have to take the risk and spend HIS money to buy YOUR songs? Why don’t YOU take the risk and spend YOUR money and YOU hire a singer to sing YOUR songs on YOUR very own CD? And YOU’LL make all the profits! Huh? Oh, what now?

On a serious note:
Here are some tips and tricks to keep in mind if you’re trying to get your song out:
c   Make sure your song is truly a great song. It is natural for a composer to think that his song is out-of-this-world. Get honest feedback! It may be very hard to find someone willing to tell you the truth, but it’ll be worth your while. If you don’t get objective opinions, you will just knock yourself out trying to market your song and all you’ll end up with is unnecessary heartache.
c   Make a proper demo. Once you’ve confirmed that your song indeed stands out, get working on a good demo. A singer will never take a song seriously if the demo was recorded without music, or if the song was sung off key. Singers reject songs all the time because the demo sounds like it was made in the shower. If you are not a good singer, get someone who is good to sing it. If you don’t know how to play music, pay a professional to do it for you. Don’t forget, you’ll never get a second chance to make a first impression.
c   Send your song to the right address. The email address on the CD booklet is usually the address of the guy who manages bookings and concerts. Sending a song to him won’t get you anywhere. Do research to find out the contact information of the people who actually pick the songs.
c   Choose your singers carefully. In many instances, the producer is the one who chooses the songs. Many times, the producer is busy producing many albums at once, and doesn’t have the time or patience to sift through songs, but rather just buys songs from tried and true song makers. In many instances, the producer himself is a composer, and would rather compose his own song than to take one from a random emailer. Don’t hold your breath waiting for a response from such producers. Send your song to the singers/producers who will actually listen to it.
c   Don’t give up. There are thousands of novice composers out there vying to get their songs recorded on professional albums. You will usually have to put in a lot of effort, sending your song to many people, and playing your song to anyone who will listen, before your song will be picked up. You never know who will like your song and bring it to its destined singer. Don’t get deflated by rejection.
c   Consider releasing it as a single. If you can’t seem to get anyone interested, consider releasing it yourself as a single. There were instances where singles were released without fanfare, and they picked up over time. Don’t forget, this will only work if the song is truly outstanding.
c   Pray, pray, pray. Ultimately, the success of a song is completely dependent on Si’atta Dishmaya. Many great songs have bummed, and many mediocre songs succeeded. As it says, “hakol tzarichim mazel, afilu sefer torah she’ba’heichal” – everything needs Mazel, even the Sifrei Torah in the Heichel [to be the Sefer Torah chosen to be read from]. Hashem is the only one who could make that connection that will lead to your song getting accepted.
