His Rav may be correct in that it was a factor in creating the takanah but there are probably unrelated reasons as well.

Good question, no answer.
But I guess I can ask similar questions on plenty other minhagim or grdorim. That's what it is and I have no problem with it as long as its not forced.

I was told (first hand) that it is a triple zero shave, so definitely some people are doing that.
