This is a great site - with a lot of really good material - not "yeshivish" but very useful.

I have heard that there is a very big home school community in Baltimore.

To throw out a nonPC thought:

It probably depends majorly on the parents, and the type of parents who want to home school their children, tend not to be the most socially normal.

I know plenty people who have done it.

And also know some of the people in Baltimore who have been exceedingly successful.

Think: supremely confident children, outgoing, well-rounded, refined, and extremely knowledgeable (think 1580s and 1600s on old SATs). Just to name a few attributes.

Note, home-schooling as a choice may be different than if one is "forced" to home-school.

True but from what I hear it's only for Shluchim's kids.
I think they are starting a "Jewish Online School" too though I'm not sure who that's geared for.
