Basic Instructions on Opening a Chase Checking Account

This thread is based on my having learned from Dan about the "Chase Trifecta" = Sapphire, Freedom, Chase checking account. I have two of the three and want to talk about the third.

We have no Chase banks branches in Pittsburgh where I live. HOWEVER... I am considering opening a Chase account next time I am in NY (which is a few times a month.) It will NOT be my main account so I do not think I will want to keep much money in there.

Can someone guide me how to best take advantage of opening a new Chase account if I am a brand new customer? I know about coupons and also about the added percentage to my Freedom rewards.

Can someone outline here how to maximize opening a new Chase checking account? Maybe it can be wikkified?

No need to go to branch. You can open account online, use coupon code and deposit starter funds via your other bank account. But to avoid fees you need to make $500 direct deposit every month.

In the past, my brother in law, who at the time need me to open an account so he could hit some sort of monthly quota, just downgraded me to a Student/College account (no fee). He moved to the business banking side but I'll find out from him if this is doable on a consistent basis at any branch (I wouldn't mind doing that with my new account anyway).

ETA: He works for Chase if that wasn't clear.

Just ask a banker to do it for you.
