Topic Wiki

The deal: 2x, 3x, 4x (or rarely, 5x) Gas Points per GC at Stop and Shop and Giant stores. Sometimes it's all GCs, sometimes just one or two types. Be sure to look at the current circular carefully for details

Credit cards CAN now be used to purchase visa/MC/Amex gift cards. :D

You will not get any Stop & Shop points on Gift Cards that are bought when there is no promotion.

You can get 1 Gas Point for every dollar you spend at S&S, Giant or Peapod all the time, and there are usually a few options in the circular to get bonus points, besides GCs. Be sure to have your S&S card scanned before purchasing or you won't get any Gas Points. You usually have to pay for GCs at the Customer Service desk, which may or may not ask for ID.

Gas Points expire 30 days after they are earned. You can check your current balance by logging in here: http://www.stopandshop.com/savings-and-rewards/rewards-program/gas-rewards/. There is also quite a bit of good general information about how the program works at that link, including a way to look up participating Shell stations and Stop & Shop stores with gas stations.

Gas Points are redeemable at Stop & Shop stores with gas stations and at participating Shell stations only. Not all Shell stations participate. It is recommended that you find out about station participation before driving around looking for one with your gas light on. :)

The link above also has instructions about how to redeem your Gas Points at Shell both within and outside of NJ. (NJ outlaws self-service gas, so it has a little bit different procedure than in other states.)

The maximum redemption is 1500 points per fill, or $1.50 off per gallon, up to 20 gallons, but be aware that if you or the attendant enters your S&S card, your full point balance up to 1500 will be taken for any size fill. Any remaining points above 1500 will remain in your account. The minimum redemption is 100 points ($0.10 off/gal). Any discount you have available from the Fuel Rewards program is in addition to the Stop & Shop discount. For example, if you have 2000 Stop & Shop points and a $0.35 discount from Fuel Rewards, you can purchase gas for $1.85 off per gallon (the maximum $1.50 discount from Stop & Shop plus the Fuel Rewards discount).

Please use
your common sense and do not ruin this deal for others (and yourself) by doing various things that might antagonize or aggravate gas station attendants in your attempt to maximize the 20 gallon limit per redemption. (For instance, the official rules at the link above say that a redemption may be used for one vehicle only.)

Abusing this deal will only mean that gas station owners will be less likely to continue to participate, and that S&S and Shell will be less likely to continue the program going forward.

To get the Cash price without paying cash you can get a refillable shell GC here: http://www.shell.us/products-services/shell-cards/refillable.html
It's refillable online by Visa or Mastercard. Even better: buy a Shell GC at Staples using an Ink card, and get 5 points per dollar.

Yes, something changed. You now have to do an extra step between earning points and using them. You have to decide whether to use points for a grocery discount or a gas discount and transfer the points accordingly.

I would post a link to the details of the new program, but the web site makes that difficult or impossible. Here is how to find the details of the new program:
https://stopandshop.com/
At the very bottom of the page, click Help in the Customer Support column.
In the menu at the left, click Programs.
In the Programs submenu, click GO Rewards.

Once you designate them to the discount ou want, you can't change them.  This is a pain to do after every purchase.  For those of us in the program for more than two years, the points automatically go for a gas discount wihtout having to join GO.  This is more advantageous if we are willing to give up on the grocery freebies and additional grocery promotions.  1500 points is worth about $25 for 17 gallons of gas and only $15 in grocery discounts.  A no brainer.  Anyone who fills up more than 10 gallons of gas per time, the gas option is the best bet.

Bottom line:  If you fill up at least 10 gallons each time and have had the card for at least two years....do nothing.  Points will automatically go to your original gas program.

That's what the website says, but somehow I got enrolled in GO despite having been earning and using gas points for well over two years.

This week they have 5X GO points on Green Dot reloadable Visa debit cards. Here's what I've gleaned. Please correct me if I'm wrong. You can use them right away for purchases. You need to register them, including your SSN and DOB, to do much else. Once you've registered, it becomes an Unlimited Cash Back card. That's a misnomer because you get 2% back only on online and mobile purchases. You can do free ATM withdrawals at MoneyPass ATMs. There's a $7.95 monthly fee which is waived if you spend $1000+. They pay 2% APY on balances up to $10K. Cancelling the card is very difficult, and customer service is non-existent.

I was originally thinking that I would get one for $500, register it, withdraw the balance at an ATM, and then cancel. But it looks like the difficulty in closing the account makes this a non-starter.

Keep in mind, reloadables Can't be purchased with a CC, AFAIK

I think it is better to convert to GO. You have 30 days to covert GO points to gas or grocery. Then you have 30 days after converting to use it. You got 60 days total other than 30 days. Also if you have more points than you can use for gas, you can use it in grocery.

If that's the case, it's not even worth considering.

I can either not register it, in which case it's about as useful as an Amex gift card, or register it and deal with hefty monthly fees until I can go through all the hoops that are needed to cancel it. It's not worth the aggravation, especially if it can't be purchased with a credit card.

Are you sure you can even use the first $500 without registering it?

Any updates from anyone who has bought/used them this week?
