Virgin Atlantic Amex from Bank of America
« on: July 16, 2008, 04:10:47 AM »
Have you seen the new Virgin Atlantic amex from boa? There offering a 20,000 mile signup bonus, 2,500 for each co-signer (up to 2), 1.5 miles/$1 spent (hey Dan looks like that beats your starwood ;) - almost) and 10% off virgin tickets.

Plus, virgin's mileage program looks (at first glance) pretty good, i checked a flight from ny to london, 22,500 miles rt!!! (could be thats only offseason). They dont fly w/ mileage to too many destinations however (or at least not w/ the mileage calculator on their site) but it looks ok.

The downside is the $90 annual fee... but i guess u can just not pay it, but it might be worth it, they offer 1 teir point per $2,500 spent a month, max of 2/month. The tier points get u elite status, 15 for silver 40 for gold, i guess it depends how much u spend (and fly - on virgin) - finally a card offering elite status (btw whatever happend w/ the resereve?).

Their mileage doesnt mix w/ virgin america, which doesnt matter b/c u can fly to europe for the same 25,000 miles.

I really didnt look into all this too much, but it looks pretty good, like boa finally has a good credit card to offer...

Virgin doesn't have free mileage tickets, NYC to London is probably 22,500 miles and $450 in fees.
Definitely not worth paying $90 for their credit card.
And their Silver elite status is always being given away.

I priced out a NYC-LHR economy 35k + $616.
IMO, it's ridiculous, you can fly a regular flight for the price of the fees.

90K Hilton is worth about $400 or so.
$310 is generally below the threshold to apply for a card for me, but hey, some people will open up a card for some Pepsi.

How about the fact that you can redeem them on CO, us airways and a few others, is there still additional fees there?

Believe me or not. HAS Advantage put up a stand in one of the local groceries in my area about 1 year ago, and they gave $10 store credit for everybody that filled out an application form to apply for their credit card (with no sign up bonus). I saw one person applying for his whole family, and he was so happy to get 10 x the $10 credit.

Later when he came to the register, they gave him a really hard time to use them, saying that this only one per person, until he got the store manager to approve it.

I felt sooooooooo bad for him. poor am haaretz.

Agreed, but it's not the worst idea to diversify the CC portfolio. Only so many Chase and AMEX cards we can have, particularly with Chase AA seemingly cracking down.

If it's for using, their value depends on how you would use them. If you're flying coach, then they'll have a terrible value. If you're flying first, then their value would increase.

My guess is that a broker, if he wanted them, would probably give you more for the Virgin, but that's a wild guess.

this already sounds more decent if it means 100k hilton points also IMHO it might make sense If boa pulls from a different credit company then Amex and chase. if that is the case would it hurt someone to get the card, transfer the points and then close it?

Anyone know if they'll refund the annual fee within x days of opening the account?
