How To install Windows 7 on a Windows 8 Device
« on: November 25, 2013, 03:47:29 PM »
I've been asked many times to create a thread with instructions of how to install Windows 7 on a Windows 8 Laptop or Desktop, so here goes.

You will need - a Windows ISO or DVD, and a Valid Product Key for that version of Windows.

1) Power on the computer and enter BIOS (Most computers will give you a few seconds to press the Bios/Setup key. In many computers you will get into the bios by hitting F2, others like HP will require pressing ESC or F10)

2) Once your in the BIOS you need to disable Secure Boot - this is really the most confusing part as each manufacturer puts this option in a different location. It will most likely be in Boot Options or Security Options. Look for Something with the Words UEFI or Secure Boot and Disable it. Save it and remain in BIOS

3) Now we need to enable Legacy Boot options or Native boot option. This will probably be in the same location as Secure Boot, it may be grayed out until you actually disable Secure Boot. Save it and exit BIOS.

VERY IMPORTANT: In certain computers for example HP - when you boot after making these changes they will ask you to confirm and put in a specific key they provide you, if you don't enter this key the first time you reboot you will need to repeat steps 2-3.

I will continue whenever I have a few minutes

This may also be called "Launch CSM" (Asus, and others).  Make sure that is *enabled*.  You do *not* have to also enable "PXE OpROM"

--------------------------

You didn't get up to this part yet, but here's some more help:

Tools to create bootable media (either DVD or USB):
Make bootable CD/DVD from ISO -- http://www.imgburn.com/
Make bootable USB from ISO -- http://rufus.akeo.ie/

Also some random help:
If you want to completely wipe the drive (you will lose recovery partition that comes with computer), and change from GPT to MBR:
Boot from Media (USB/DVD).
Get to this screen:

Press SHIFT + F10
Type the following commands (one at a time):

diskpart
select disk 0
clean
convert mbr

But usually you can just delete the OS partition, (usually with System Reserved (usually the first one)), leave the recovery partition intact, and select the now-deleted partition as new space for W7 install.  See here for images: http://goo.gl/l0QvUM

P.S. You can (should) always backup your drive before messing around.  I personally used clonezilla many times, but it may be a bit complicated.  Paragon has some good options.  (There are many, but be wary, not all of them deal with GPT well).

You could use any dell windows 7 cd and use the win7 sticker label on pc or laptop for the license numbers.

Install a win7 start menu, have it set to automatically direct you to the desktop screen (when you start the computer) and you won't even know you have win 8.
Love me or hate me. I still love you.

I used it, and in pretty happy except that you still switch screens sometimes.
