There are some things money can't buy; for everything else, use miles ;)

Does it make sense that my 7 camera system with 8 chanel DVR would cost $3500 installed? ( and that includes 2 free cameras)

Yes.
But to know better, it will help if you supply the models and brand name of the parts.

Thread Resurrection:
Now that substantiated reports say that Google expresses serious interest in acquiring Dropcam, I'd like to revisit the issue of security camera systems and Dropcam in particular.
The consensus online (Amazon reviews, blogs, etc) is that Dropcam is a very good system considering it's price ($150). The Samsung SmartCam HD Pro is also highly touted but it costs slightly more.
One caveat, if you will, on Dropcam is that you have to pay a fee for access to the cloud for old footage; watching live is free, going back for 7 days is $10 a month. I'm wondering if I can setup my own DVR system for this to avoid paying them $120 a year. Comments and suggestions welcome.

The question is, does anyone have experience with either of these two systems or can anyone suggest a better system that's in this price range?

I use a foscam for my front door. I don't store the footage, but someone posted that you can easily use an old android and a hard drive to store footage for free.

Why do that if you can just have the Foscam send you snapshots every 10 seconds?

Because a 10 second snap shots are not the same as streaming video.

of course. Use any IP can app. You are not restricted to foscams app.

You need to open a port on your router, make sure the camera is using the same fixed IP address from the router.
Also use a DNS service to like noip to make sure your external IP remains static.

I did try another app but you lost me after that.  I dint know any of this stuff bytI think i had to open a port and make sure our was a static ip to get it to work in the first place. It works fine to my home and work computer but doesn't work on the phone apps

Call Foscam customer support and they will set up your DNS service thru them. Free.

I'm looking to buy 4 outdoor IP cameras with the following specs and NVR:

weather proof
high quality
night vision
would need remote access
Wired (As I understand that they work better)
vandalism proof isn't a must, but would consider if it isn't a lot more.
2T NVR

Any ideas?
