Floating wicks give you a better flame but sink.  And I think its a short cut.
What do you mean it's a short cut? I'm not criticizing I just never heard anything about it and that's what I'm using. I hope it's not an issue :(

Not all metal tubes are equal. IME the best by far are צינורות הפלא with pure cotton wicks, preferably the twisted ones. Just make sure not to put water on the bottom since they suck up the oil from the bottom like a straw. If you don't want to full the cup just fill it up halfway without water. Most people who I've spoken to who these didn't work for it was because they put water on the bottom.
Dont know about those, but I use tubes that are not fully closed (aren't most like this?) so the top half of the wick absorbs oil even if the bottom half absorbs water.
If you don't care why would you comment?

Most of the tubes are not fully closed. At least they're not supposed to be, if they are then the flame goes out after a few min. Lots of the ner mitzvah ones come closed (I would assume accidentally) so I just pretty them apart a bit.

I use the metal tubes with the base, and roll nice long wicks out of cotton balls. I make them long so I can reuse them each night (which is a hidur as they light better).
I always had a tough time with the floating wicks.
Back in my yeshiva days I would improvise and put a bobby pin ontop of the cup and pull the wick through.
And a general obvious tip, let the wick soak the oil for a few min b4 lighting.

Plumbers lamp wick is strings of cotton too and gives a much cleaner flame
"pishton" is linen/flax. The other thing mentioned in M"B is "Tzemer gefen"  Aka cotton-wool. Not sure what the status of cotton strings that are not "fluffy" is...

They say that reusing wicks on one hand is a hiddur because they light better; on the other hand a fresh clean one is also a hiddur. So do what ever you like:)

Cotton-wool? What's that? Tzemer gefen means cotton. Why would fluffiness matter?

The term “cotton wool” can refer to two products: raw, minimally processed cotton and a form of cotton that has been processed to be especially absorbent. There are a variety of uses for these materials, and both forms of the product are typically readily available in stores, especially those that stock medical and cosmetic supplies.

In the first sense, cotton wool is raw cotton that has been combed to remove impurities and then cleaned to sterilize it. Tufts of raw cotton do look rather like hunks of wool, explaining the name. The texture is generally very silky and soft, and it can sometimes be a bit squeaky, depending on how it is processed.[\quote]
Maybe processed, string of cotton are not so absorbent.

Dont use the holders. try to get the longer cotton wicks, let just the bottom soak up oil by laying it on top of the cup wait a min then slowly twist and rotate the wick until its spiraled downward in the cup and you have the size wick you want sticking up. And as you are twisting it down you can see the oil getting soaked into the wick which helps keep the wick steady as it weighs it down so make sure you do it slowly

I did this tonight with some success.  I think all the holders choke off the air needed for the flame.

If the cup is too deep, the air can't get in either.

I used to use the empty cups and aluminum tubes from ready-made sets my family got one year, and they were fantastic because they fit perfectly in my menorah, such that they are forced to stand straight - directly upward. Before those, I always would have to keep tilting and adjusting the cups to be exactly level. But eventually they degrade and leak, so this year I bought glass. Unfortunately none of the sizes/shapes available duplicated precisely my past experience but I got it close enough.

After trying out the different sizes and shapes from Ner Mitzvah, I ended up with their Round #3 cups. The box lists the various size appropriate wick holders you can use - I'm using the small Tzinores with the tube pushed down through the base so that it hits the bottom of the glass. They sell the Tzinores to be used with the wax covered wicks, but I use the multi ply cotton wicks (don't remember which ply count). I've used both those and the regular cotton ones and I find the multi-ply gives a better flame. I use the whole wick, doubling up the top by folding it over before putting it in the tube. That give it a much nicer flame IMO.

The quality of the oil definitely matters. I've been using the 'Chanukkah' oil, but I'm thinking of trying out the supermarket extra virgin olive oil when I run ou.

Browsing through old pics and found this. Beautiful flame after a couple of hours using plumbers lamp wick in brass tube and extra virgin olive oil from supermarket.

Works every time, but sometimes results in a large flame, depending on the thickness of the wick.
