You know how much I love you man, but I have to disagree! Passport & Elements are not the same. Elements does not use Smartware and does not use the same firmware as Passport. They also have different warranties, Passport - 2 or 3 years depending which / Elements - 1 Year.

These are the new Element Drives and come with the same Smartware bundled and the same USB 3.0 faster interface, the only real difference is the 2 Year Warranty and design. As far a reliability - they are equally unreliable and have the same firmware corruption issues which is mainly because of the onboard USB interface vs the native SATA interface. I was comparing this to the Toshiba Deal listed which has the same 1 year warranty as well and pretty much the same design flaw.
Also for the record - it does contain the same internal drive only different casing..

Actually if I remember correctly this drive may be more reliable as it doesn't load one of the firmwares that the Passport loads (the encryption firmware).

This is true, but even the Seagate 3.0 Portable drives are built much smarter - they have a detachable USB to Sata connector.

Yah, but how much longer do u think that's gonna last. It's cheaper to manufacture a single controller as opposed to a hdd controller & a usb controller. I see plenty of BOTH types coming in for data recovery. The Passports lately have more Head Crashes on new hard drives (less than 90 days old) than I have ever seen before.

Even if it never fell or got knocked around. The Seagates will sometimes fail for no reason as well but much less than the WD.

I totally agree. The Passports have a "ghost in the machine" and fail without warning and without any rhyme or reason. Keeps us in business though

Pretty much all their drives are different variations, they name them as they see fit. Drive manufacturers buy the cheapest parts in bulk and every time they change one part or get bored they change the names. External drives are also generally the cheaper drives of the pack - when manufacturing drives they tend do save the better drives for internal usage.
