It could be that different types of amex cards process the credit at different rates.

Anyone cashing in now is losing out on on the 5ppd they could have made on Freedom through 12/31/13 or the added protections from Amex, while in 2014 they could be buying diapers, wipes, toilet paper, or anything else that won't benefit from the protection with 33% off until their GC balance runs out.

I keep seeing people buying electronics under $10k and other purchases under $300 and even under $100 and I'm wondering how many ways I can explain this ;)

For those that do get what I'm saying, you can try changing your payment method and the GC amount will be added to your GC balance on your Amazon account.
Your logic is flawed.
Any real mileage junkie has several Ink cards which earn 5 points per dollar (plus Plink, etc) for Amazon spending via office supply stores.

Why would anyone with Ink card to maximize Freedom at amazon this quarter?  Much better plays at some dept stores.

The point is mainly for people without Ink though if you have checking there's a small advantage to Freedom.

But why not do AMEX now anyway?
Why wouldn

I hear about the Ink vs Freedom but wouldn't it make sense to save the GCs for items that don't necessarily need the protections offered by Amex, like household and Subscribe n' Save items?

If you have 50 Amex cards and aren't ever going to get rid of $3750 in Amazon GCs, then yes, buy a laptop with them. For the rest of us... ;)

I'd rather have 33.3% off than a warranty.
I'd probably value a warranty at 10%, maybe 15%.  Obviously that depends on the item though.

Anyway anyone can add more AUs for more GCs.

Another perspective:
Will you be paying for anything on Amazon over the next few years that will be money you could have in your bank account rather than paying your Ink bill for the Amazon GCs you bought at a office supply store??
If yes, save your GCs for those purchases, 33% off $75 today or tomorrow next year is still 33% off $75.
If no, your a lucky(ier) man! :)  (but most of us don't have that luxury)

I don't think you need a confirmation email. You can easily check if you've gotten this deal by signing into Amex online and scroll down to the bottom and click "My offers." There you will see that you've been targeted and/or signed up. And if you don't see it, you can chat with Amex and ask them to manually put the offer into your account. But from what I've seen (with my cards) that all accounts have gotten the offers. Just 'grab' it in My Offers.
good point. when i was trying to register with the original link some cards said thery were enrolled already even though i never did, sure enough when i go to my amex account it shows all 3 cards registered. seems when i did 1 card it automatically did all 3 on my acct...anyone have this?

Just skimmed through this thread and didnt see a clear answer.

Does this credit work on purchases from 3rd party merchants? (specifically "ACI gift cards INC. an amazon company")

I think maybe what he means is that if you don't need the cash right now (it would be sitting in your bank account anyway), you may as well buy as many Amazon gift cards as you can now (thereby laying out lots of money) in order to have the 33.3% off for future Amazon purchases.

My .02

I just doesn't make sense to stock up on gift cards now and still use the freedom card. Why not use up your credit and that use the freedom card? Regardless of whether  you have the ink card you can almost always get amazon credit with your freedom card for 5ppd.
For example next year Q1 is gas stations. Many reports are that you can go inside a WaWa and buy gcs and get 5ppd. And if youre unsure of that then wait for Q2 when you'll be able to buy them in lowes. Q3 gas again Q4 AMAZON

And regarding the warranty. Like dan said for a small savings (IE 5ppd vs 1spg point) Id say go for the warranty. but for %33????
If you want the clearest proof that a warranty isn't worth %33 look at square trade. Thet dont charge %33 of your product value to insure it.
Youre basically saying, Hey I'm gonna pay 100 bucks to insure my new $300 camera?????? when square trade would charge you less then $63(without any of their readily available coupons, $38 with the %40off coupon)

I bought my camera using this deal and I'm not sure if it's worth $27 to insure via square trade, So i shouldve insured with amex for $75??
