Large carryon onto plane (art work)

I bought some pictures in Israel that I want to bring back to the states.  I have seen people bring such things onto the plane or in the airport passed check in. What do most people do or how do they get away with bringing it on the plane? Do the flight attendants store it for them? Any advice?

You'll have to pay extra for an oversize baggage.

I'm not sure they will actually charge you, I watched someone bring a wedding gown with a full train, and the fa just put it in the special hanging area of the first class.

IMO They probably wont charge you if they dont see it by check in but they may force you to put it under the plane at the gate
