Insurance question
« on: December 04, 2013, 10:48:48 AM »
Hey,

I'm renting a car for a few days from Enterprise while we look to replace our totaled car. She obviously offered to sell me insurance, and I told her thatI have it covered on my United card. She said that the credit card only works if I'm paying, not if the insurance is paying. Is she right? (I didn't buy the insurance).

They are billing hte insurance or insurance is reimbursing you for the rental?

And does your regular car insurance not cover rentals?

Pay for it on United and have the insurance reimburse you with a check?

She probably is right. The CC company won't cover  it if the rental wasn't charged on their card.

However, if you have full coverage on your personal policy then that should extend to a rental. if you have liability only then it will not.

Thanks everyone.

Just to clarify, Geico told me that they pay directly and politely declined my request to pay nd be paid back. Also, I do have insurance that would cover it; I was just hoping to avoid using my insurance if necessary because of deductible and increased rate.

I'd imagine in the worst case that you can always switch the payment method from Geico to your CC.
Please CMIIW, never been in this scenario.

GEICO will cover anyways. I guess you could change and not get reimbursed by GEICO.
In the future you don't need to go to enterprise. Just tell GEICO you'd rather rent from Hertz and be reimbursed.
FYI: They even reimburse rentals in Canada
Life isn't about checking the boxes. Nobody cares.

When you say Geico is paying, in what capacity are they paying? Is it from have rental coverage on your policy? The other party's insurance?

Also, I hope the fact that you have time to post about this means everyone is okay, right?

B"H everyone is okay.
There was no other car. Our Geico coverage is providing a seven-day rental. The Geico woman did not know, but at Enterprise, they said that Geico pays as I use the car, so I don't think I can retroactively pay on my United card. It's possible that Geico pays differently for other rental companies (though It may be the same), but the Enterprise is conveniently located and has been very helpful thus far so time is money.
This time, I spent $9/day for insurance. It hurt doing it, but I drove more comfortably.
