Oil is thicker than water, soap is thicker than oil, so a good soap washes away oil.

IME -
The best way to clean oil is by drying it away with a paper towel.
Water cannot clean oil. So first dry them down, wipe out all oil, then a simple rinse of water and soap will do the trick.
You definitely should also use a paper towel to really clean it, but even leaving it in hot water will remove much of the oil.

My mother's claims the best thing is to put them in a sealed container with water and ammonia for a week. Then just wash them. I have not checked it out yet, due to ammonia being illegal in israel.

it really works i have done it

My cleaning lady cleaned them today...like I posted above, all she needed was soap, water, and steel wool.  Crystal clear, no oil.  But all of the above eitzahs sound good.

the best way is to pour ammonia with hot water in a sealed zip lock bag and put in your menorah glass cups. add ammonia and water until the cups are covered in liquid.  if you have an "outdoor" menorah. remove the glass walls, put in a foil cookie sheet and with ammonia and hot water and cover with saran wrap or put in a small garbage bag and seal.  after 24 hours all the black stuff just floats away. rinse and you have new glass cups and glass walls.

I soak them in the garbage can for a day, then in the dumpster outside for another day, then in a landfill for a year. And they're nice and shiny every year!

Paper towel-  wiping first is logical and makes less work for the soap, but you get your hands all dirty.
Soap-             has degreasers built in anyway and readily accessible
Ammonia-      sounds interesting, but could be more hazardous (smells, kids)
The wife-       (ALOL cuz I choose that method sometimes!)-still takes away time from household
Garbage-       waste of money
Dishwasher-  sounds most efficient (1. if you have one, 2. Does it affect other dishes washed at same time?)

Conclusion: Dishwasher if you have one, otherwise soaking in soapy water.
p.s. Ammonia may be my method of choice once I try it

This year I’m throwing mine away. Some cracked mid Yom Tov. I watched it like a hawk, worried they might give way but they stayed intact. A channukah miracle :)
I washed my cups every day with dishwashing soap and water. That’s how I do it for my shabbos oil glasses as well. Easy peasy
My greatest achievement? I am fluent in FRIENDS quotes

Mrs. shwarmabob used to clean them with soap for many years, then one year she rebelled and since then her custom is to chuck them out. She claims that we can be extravagant by buying new ones every year.
I take the more frugal path so if I make it home before they are unceremoniously disposed of today, then I will put them in the dishwasher.
