"Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey Essential Facts
Contrary to popular belief Jack Daniel’s isn’t bourbon. The spirit is charcoal filtered, which is forbidden by government bourbon making rules."

My comment was based on what was told to me at a distillery tour at Woodford Reserve, another Brown Forman facility. From what I've seen and heard bourbons can be charcoal filtered and Bookers for example is also charcoal filtered and it sounds like many others are as well.

Unlike anything you have ever tasted, Booker's is one of the only uncut, unfiltered, straight-from-the-barrel, bourbons available today. It's bottled at its natural proof of between 121 and 127, and aged between six and eight years. Booker's Bourbon delivers a range of intense flavors from oak tannin and smoky vanilla to lighter tones of mocha and coffee. Add spring water to customize the taste and finish to your palate. The complexity provided by this straight-from-the-barrel bourbon makes Booker's the rarest, absolute best bourbon you'll ever taste.

My shul conducted a bourbon/whiskey tasting one Succos and brought in a rep from Jack Daniels that explained all the different varieties. Technically Jack Daniels has all the right ingredients but since its produced out of Bourbon County it doesnt count as Bourbon therefore they call it "Tennessee Whiskey" and their only bourbon is  Woodford.

My mistake, I misread a link about Jim Beam Choice (green label) which is charcoal filtered. In any event, from what I've read, any bourbon could be charcoal filtered and still legally be called a bourbon.

My reading of the law led me to agree with that to a degree

JD is emphatically calling themselves NOT a bourbon, but that may just be their attempt at differentiation.

I just wonder if the law's provision about using new charred American oak precludes the use of maple.

I was thinking about that also because they seem to be pretty clear about new American white oak (to the exclusion of french oak).

At the end of the day I'd rather stick with the whiskeys brewed close to home like Stranahan's, Tincup and Fireside.

Has Singleton on shabbos, pretty underrated scotch:

As of Now: (Updated)
Best Scotches
For 40-60: The Singleton
For 60-80: Balvenie 14yr Carribean Cask
For 80-100: Glenlivet Nadurra

For 40-60 go with Balvenie 12 Yr Single Malt Doublewood or Cardhu

IMHO the Balvenie 12yr tastes too much like glenlivet 15 which Singleton trumps; didn't try Cardhu yet

IMHO swap the Nadurra for Compass Box Hedonisim

Didn't try it yet. It's on the waiting list :). Sounds very interesting given the fact that it's a blended grain scotch

Have Cardhu in my bar, I'd pick McCallan or Glennrothes anyday over it still

Has anyone heard that Glenlivit's kashrus situation has changed, supposedly by CRC in Chicago?
