Time?

Impossible to say. You'll have to monitor the short term forecast to see if it's supposed to hit in the next hour or so.

This page also has a wealth of up to the minute info, as well as constant reports from people over the country.

No. That's the one I own

It should be fine. If you could get a hold of a faster and/or wider lens it'd be even better.

Excuse my ignorance but why would a fast lens be needed? Don't you need long exposures for aurora photography?

A lens with a large aperture is called a fast lens. Large aperture = more light = lower ISO needed = better pictures.

You also don't want to use too long a shutter speed, as you will lose any structure and end up with just a green smudge.

If your doing sky photography or night shots where you want a large dof wouldn't you want a slower aperture to get more did and pinpoint stars (i think you mentioned that in an earlier lesson in sf).

Different types of night photography require completely different settings. Aurora, milky way, and star trails are all different.

So there's no concern with small dof for aurora shots?

Enough light is more important.

What does this mean for us?

NOAA is still predicting a 90% probability of a 'severe' solar storm hitting within the next 24 hours. This will push the kp back to 7 or above.

As far as cloud cover, we'll keep on checking the forecast and make a final decision later this afternoon, I think.

Very dark (use the Dark Sky Map), very open (lake or field), very north.

Do you have a specific location at Lake Pleasant in mind?
Would love more info about the place itself, like if its snowy mountain roads, etc.
