This was a real deal (and still is to a certain extent). The Venue 8 is normally $299. They were selling it for $99 to the first 20 customers purchasing it in Microsoft B&M stores today, as well as the first 100 buyers online. As you probably realize, that's a ridiculously low number to be selling, so they were likely gone online in well under 60 seconds, and probably pretty quickly in stores as well. After those numbers are met, they're selling it for $199 the rest of the day.

Gimmick /free advertising. Look how many news articles there are about this.

I don't even believe there was a promotion. When I came to the store at 920, they had a line outside, but the employees said that nobody on the line was in the first 20 because they were already taken in the store. And then they just let the website crash for a couple minutes and everyone thinks the 100 were taken.

Good thinking on their part.
