select the column, right click, Format cells, Custom and choose the option that says 0 (second option below General).

It changes the last digit to a "0"

If you need it stored as a number, Excel only stores 15 digits. If you don't care if it's stored as text, format it as text. The solution suggested earlier with a question mark is actually supposed to be an apostrophe. That will convert it to text without showing the apostrophe.

That works but then every time I have an entry the cell has a stupid error indicator displayed that I have to clear.

You don't have to clear it, just leave it alone.

Then it gives a little triangle in the top left of the cell indicating an error.
I thought Excel was powerful. It can't store a 20 digit number properly? That is sad.
