If i have a JFK-FRA flight on one reservation, can I book a star alliance connecting flight (austrian) and have them check bags all the way through from JFK?

I used my soon to be expiring(Dec 1) krisflyer miles for a United flight but still have approx 19,000 expiring miles left.  I dont really need a car or hotel and other ideas to use/save them?

If I have a singapore flight booked on AC and a austrian "connecting" flight booked on United, who do I contact to try and have my luggage sent all the way through to my Austrian flight?

ask SQ to link the Austrian flight to your reservation, could be helpful later, but really its upto check-in agent to tag bags thru.
