Once you have the Suite on waitlist, book an economy or business seat with your miles and then if the waitlist clears, you cancel that ticket.

Check Y/J and if available book or wait to see if the waitlist will clear. You do not go to the airport hoping to clear the seat there. Is this a serious question?

Just last week they wouldn't let me waitlist on a flight that I had a confirmed seat (didn't try online).

don't they usually clear wait lists as they board the flight?

Could be. Never had the issue, but I guess because it may be two award types that that is the reason your being told it's two awards.

SQ Standard award JfK-FRA = 68k

if i book a united flight in coach via SQ, will there be any additional fees (outside of the extra taxes) on an upgrade to bus if/when the saver business opens or is it just the extra miles?

Extra miles + $20 change fee.
