I am comparing booking an award on united direct TLV-EWR with United miles vs Singapore miles, there seems to be a discrepancy in the taxes being charged. I thought the taxes and awards were the same no matter which miles you use to book, as long as there are no extra fees or fuel charges?

See attached on the same exact flight, Singapore seems to be adding an extra $24.50 SGD that United is not charging
Normal. AC also charges more for UA domestic flights than UA does.

It's does, somewhere way back I posted that some Airlines do charge US tax

so you are saying there is an optional $18 tax that airlines can choose to enforce and UA chooses not to? doesnt sound right

I don't think you read what I wrote, these are mandatory government taxes, not YQ. how can one airline charge a government tax while another airline doesn't?

the tax either exists or it doesn't it shouldn't make a difference who is issuing the ticket

+1

the tax exists on revenue tickets, for mileage tickets only airlines that charge yq charge it since the yq automatically triggers the tax

If you look at the attachments to my post no YQ is being charged on either site

yes but I think that because their system collects yq on mileage tickets it triggers the tax even if the specific ticket doesn't have the yq charge

so there are gov taxes that only exist for revenue tickets and mileage tickets with YQ?  would love to see something in writing about that as I always assumed gov taxes are not negotiable

Yes.  I believe other airlines simply absorb this tax.

Again, just like AC charges the "Passenger Facility Charge" (XF) tax on domestic NA bookings, but not US, whereas UA (and I believe SQ), only charges AY.

I found this on FT, from skimming through it seems that for "free" mileage tickets that tax should not be collected

so these other airlines pay the tax for you? hard to really understand as why would some airlines would absorb a tax that is owed by the passenger/customer; airlines are a business and its not like they would be doing anything that would raise the ire of customers as gov taxes are the responsibility of the passenger

Excited about being able to book Star Alliance partner flight online. Less so about devaluation.

I think its the other way around a free ticket should not be charged these taxes but some airlines don't bother writing a separate tax algorithm for award tickets and just charge for all tickets the same taxes regardless of the irs regulations

So the IRS ends up getting the money or the airline?

an example is the approximately 6% luxury tax for premium cabins leaving Venezuela which aa doesn't charge on mileage tickets because 6% of 0 is still 0 while ba does charge it for travel on aa
