Topic Wiki

Ill spell it out for the feeble.
You dont call up and ask if they take Visa gift cards for  a money order.
You dont call up and ask if they take Mastercard gc for a MO
You dont flippin call!

You go into a store and ask for an MO and she says ok its, XXX.XX say no p, take out your debit card and swipe. If the rep says no debits then apologize and leave. If she says lemme see that is that a gc say NO ITS A DEBIT. if she asks wheres your name you say (among many other options to think of) the permanent one is on the way and im using the temp one until i receive it. If you need to swipe more than once, its ok to have multiple debits (for those who are lacking in common sense). But be nonchalant dont be in your face about it to the rep. Reps want to feel they're in charge, its natural for a minimum paid employees...

I think this should give the basics on how to get a MO if you find a place.... this is not rocket science. But it seems like it is to some.... Where to cash out GCs for MO:

Where                                       Which gift card                                   Fee                                     max MO amount

Service desk @ Wal-Mart                  MVD,  Visa from Meta bank,                                  70 cents                                           $1000
                                                  chase (phased out)                                                                                      $1000

Rite Aid                                                                                                 $0.89                                          $500

"HaNesher HaGadol"                            One Vanilla                                 .52                                          $500 max
meijer-69 cents up to $1000-most stores
NOTES:
MVD charges 50 cents per transaction so ask for MO of card amount- (fee+ 50 cents) eg @WM ask for 498.80 on MO (or cover $1.20 some other way)

Well, I just got turned down at Target (which was a surprise to me) so I went to my grocery store to cash out $2000 of OVs by MO. The lady did the first MO for me but when I asked for another she got nervous and asked what kind of card. I said DEBIT of course. Nevertheless, she ran to the back and spoke with a manager. A minute later she comes out and says if you want to buy MOs you need to fill out a form. She asked for my DL and I calmly handed it over to her. Then she asks for my SS#. I said I am not comfortable with that. She said she understand but then she cannot sell me MOs because this is how people "do money laundering." I pointed out that the top of the form said $3,000-$10,000 and I was not doing that much. She said it doesn't matter. Anyone buying MOs with a store bought debit card must fill it out.

The line was growing so I calmly said, "I see the line is growing and I have to think about whether I am comfortable with giving my SS#. I will come back later."

Anyway, she already had half the form filled out (name, DL#, address.)

Should I go back and give her my SS# and finish cashing out and just be happy? Should I worry that she has my info and that I refused to give her my SS#?

Any advice?

I used to do this to get free crap at those CC sign up stations at sport games and other festivals.

I would never give out my SS# unless necessary and I would even hesitate to give out my license #. I once gave it out to get a $500 VGC and I still regret doing it. Remember,  you have no idea who has access to this information and if it's on paper any employee could have a look without anyone else even knowing...

Lessee, DL has birthday and address....SS has...yep, that's a bad idea. Never give out your SS. Go elsewhere.

For someone who has access to money orders (.52/ $500) what is the advantage to using serve/bb/redcard for cashing out gift ...uuhh... debit cards? Is it to save the fee, or are there risks in using MO, and what are they.

First of all to save the fee. Second, there are risks ( although minimal ) in depositing many MO's into ones bank account. Mainly money laundering concerns, which is why many banks don't let you deposit big amounts of cash, or MO's w/o I.d. etc.

Why is the question to do MO or serve/bb/redcard. You should do MO and serve/bb/redcard!  ;)

I get the tone of your post, but AFAIK, you can load infinite amounts with MO, so why do you need anything else?
I started this game with bluebird (I did dabble with the mint...) before i knew about MO, and Im wondering why i keep the blue-red bird. I use both, so as not to become a pain in any specific store, but i was wondering what others do.

This. Also while technically there are no limits on MO's, there is concern how much banks will tolerate. So bb takes some pressure off of that.
There is another factor as well. BB/serve can be loaded with VR so back in the day that was way more preferable to MO's. You only had to make 1 trip to cvs. The rest you did from home. With MO's in addition to buying GC's you  have to go to WM or elsewhere that sells MO and then to bank. And red of course had CC option. I would imagine people just continue old habits and don't re-evaluate.

Some apps do not read MO's and/or limit deposit amount.

BTW, with mobile deposits, it cuts out the trip to the bank.

Yes, but as Marco Polo pointed out, some apps don't take or can't read.I remember doing one where it took so long that it would have been quicker to just go to the bank.

Have yet to find a FI that will tolerate large sustainable mobile MO deposits.
