Going to drive from NYC to Montréal this week, anything interesting where to stop on the way this time of the year? Going with 5 month old daughter so skiing/snow tubing is not an option
theres lake placid olympic village with spectator sports half hour out of way

Howe Caverns.  Half an hour west of Albany. Nice stalagmite cave, well done attraction.

Does Lake George area have anything doing in winter?  That's about halfway from NY to Montreal.

Taking the Taconic is a nicer, but longer route. My GPS once had me take it from Montreal to NY because of traffic and it was an enjoyable ride.

FYI
Any NY'er driving to Canada be aware that your car has high chances of being stolen! and it takes about 24-48 for your car to be on a ship to the unknown.
If you're going to Montreal call the local Chaverim a day or 2 before and they'll give you a kit with locks and a GPS tracker for your car.

They target NY cars over the Canadian since the locals can't track them for some reason.

In the end it looks like I won't have much time on the way, I'll probably drive via the Taconic State Parkway and 'merge' to the 87 through Poughkeepsie & stop for a walk on the Walkway over the Hudson bridge

If you're up for walking in winter weather check out Ausable Chasm. One of my favorite stops on the NY-Montreal route.

I think I'll swap this for the walkway, but will call them to confirm accessibility with stroller/baby

On the way to Montreal I ended up stopping at Ausable Chasm - Beautiful place!

Chaveirim of Montreal gave me a GPS tracker to hide in my car, a steering wheel lock bar and showed me how to remove the fuse/switch to prevent the car from turning on with the car key to prevent my car from being stolen.

On the way back to NY, I put my car on cruise so not to go over speed limit and avoid a ticket only to be pulled over 3 minutes away from my house for not fully stopping at a stop sign  >:(

Sounds wild. Have heard of some car thefts here in Toronto, but didn't know it was a higher chance than other big cities, or that they target american cars.

Putting an Airtag in your car never hurts either...

They target American cars because the Canadian insurance companies supposedly require to have a tracker installed

Nope. I've had at least 3 different insurers here, and none ever mentioned it. Also never heard of such a thing from anyone else here.

So not sure what the reason is, but the fact is the American cars get stolen in the high quantities.
The weekend I was there I know of a family that they had 5 cars stolen overnight.
Montreal is next to the port from where the cars are shipped within 24-48 hours from when it's stolen directly to 3rd world countries for resale
