Citi dividend card - 5 % drug stores
« on: December 15, 2013, 10:46:32 PM »
Citi dividend card is giving 5% on drug stores first qtr 2014 up to the annual limit of $300 cash back. So $6000 of vanilla reloads will get you the max.

I believe that every year this card has at least one qtr with drug stores so it might be worth it to sign up just for that (card carries no fees; and you will get a 100 sign up bonus although that might count towards the 300 max annual - not sure)

Alternatively you can downgrade the premier card which carries a 125 annual fee. If that is what you wish to do I suggest you do it immediately because the card conversion takes 51 days to complete (per federal regs acc to my understanding). Of course you can also convert the preferred or the hilton visa gold if you have those and don't really use them.

2014 Q2 was just announced. 5% CB at:
  • Home Furnishing Stores
  • Home & Garden Stores
  • The Home Depot®
Too bad they don't announce the whole year in advance like Chase does for Freedom. That way we would know in advance if there is something more useful coming later in the year. For example, if I knew I could get 5% CB on groceries later in the year, I would not have paid extra VR fees to spend $6K at CVS this quarter.

Is there anyone who didn't max out in Q1?

Had I bought $6K in VR, I would have spent $47.40 in VR fees that I could not earn 5% on because it would exceed the annual $300 CB limit. For that reason, and in the event any other useful categories would come up later in the year, I only did about $5500 MS in Q1. Furthermore, my Dividend card is an AmEx, so I still want to earn some CB if I take advantage of AmEx offers throughout the year. For example, I'll be spending $75 at Home Depot this month and will get the $15 AmEx promotion and still earn 5% CB.

In Q4, I used this card with the Best Buy Amex offer to pay about $250 towards the cost of a pile of $200 Visa gift cards and also earned 5%, thereby reaching the $300 maximum dividend for the year. So it was a good strategy to not max out the limit in Q1.

2015 Q1: Macy's, Macys.com and home furnishing stores

It looks like Citi may have finally joined Chase in announcing the categories for the whole year in advance. When you follow the link upthread, it shows:
2015 Q2: The Home Depot and Home & Garden Stores
2015 Q3: Hilton and Airlines
2015 Q4: Best Buy and Department Stores

I retain my Citi Dividend card as it was my 1st CC. I used up the $300 way back in the beginning of 2017. The current quarter is 5% back at Best Buy & other department stores. My December statement just closed and I believe that because next statement will close after Jan 1, spending till the end of the year will be credited at that rate. Let's if I can hit $6000 = $300!
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

I did it all this year under the drugstore quarter. Hopefully same next year.

I made a random call to Citi one day to see what they could offer. They offered an extra .2% so I only needed to spend $5769.23 at the pharmacy instead of $6000 to max out for the year.

5% cash back at drugstores during 2019 Q2.

I tried to pay for a $500 OV at CVS with my Citi Dividend AmEx but it got declined. I called Citi and they insisted that Citi didn't decline it; the "network" did, meaning American Express. I asked why, but was told that I have to ask American Express that question. Every time I tried to call American Express or Citi tried to transfer me to them, the call was routed back to Citi as soon as I provided the account number.

I made small purchases with this card at CVS without any problem. I also made large GC purchases with my Citi Dividend MasterCard without a problem.

Is it going to be impossible to MS this card at CVS?
