Is it just a Chabad yeshiva thing to auction things for learning x baal peh?
IIRC, one yeshiva used to auction off for blatt to learn, not baal peh, the other auctioned off some kibbudim for money and some for learning. (I guess it was because 2nd had alumni joining)

I've seen some yeshivishe places do it twice because they sold one for money and one for blatt or done by kids for mishnayos.

some yeshivos do, but they do it mostly for the regular pesichos/aliyos and save Maftir Yona and pesichas neila for the hanhala

but I've been to a yeshiva which has some regular mispalalim and there they auctioned everything except for the regular pesichas (during chazaras hashatz etc.) Which they had a Bachur give out to the bachrim

In YOEC there were bochurim and regular mispalalim. They auctioned off everything for cash, but bochurim could cover the cash portion with a set rate (maybe 1x chai?) per blatt, perek tanya, or maimor baal peh.

well I guess that changed over the years, I believe these days it's all auctioned in advance.

In the second day simchas torah minyan in the Mir they do sell everything (at least the last time I checked, I havent been there since the year after I got married). It's split about 50/50 between money and blatt learned over the next year... about 7-8 years ago there was a bachur who pleaged over 8000 blatt  (he did buy a few kibuddim) and then added in the whole yerushalmi in his mishebeirach... (I know the guy, he was done sometime during summer zman)

In the US i was often in a yeshiva that would auction anything and every thing, for hours retzufos over the next week - in minimum 30 minute chunks

The guy finished Shas  bavli more than 3 times and the entire Yerushalmi in less than a year?

There are often multiples applied when done with Rashi and Tosfos.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Rashi is ikar limud.
Otherwise true.
However, if he did it just Gemara Rashi, he would have finished even faster.

OT but if you learn something well, you will be able to do it quicker the next time.
So take a bachur of above average inteligence, and extreme but healthy hasmada, and a mehalach halimud that focuses on covering ground while getting stuff clear and not messing up your comprehesion of the sugya by premature addition of lamdus... You get a 24 year old who has finished shas with Tosfos multiple times, on top of the times just with Rashi.

Anyway, not sure what the shock is - People finish shas every year. how long do you think it takes them each day? For most of them its not even their ikar limud. a bachur sitting at a shtender for 12+ hours.... I just know I don't yet have that kind of hasmada nor that level of ahavas hatorah

Correct, without Rashi counted as half and multiples applied when done with Tosfos and Rishonim.
IINM, Avromie remembered that there was a difference with or without rashi, but got it confused.

Average people talk about things
BIG PEOPLE TALK ABOUT IDEAS.
