Buying and selling on DDF
« on: December 24, 2013, 10:59:56 PM »
So I have been in some buying/selling transactions recently and I had a couple of ideas that I wanted to bounce off of everyone.

1. It would be great to have some type of escrow system to hold funds during a transaction. We are all (hopefully) honest, but there are always a few dishonest guys out there so we all have a tough time figuring out if the buyer pays first or the seller sends the item first. In theory, it would be great to have a third party hold the funds during the transaction and not release until both parties agree, and get paid a small fee for his service. With Paypal or AP it could be done pretty easily. That said, the challenge would be - how can we trust the escrow agent? I would be interested in doing this service if we could figure out a way to make it work.

2. I know that the purpose of DDF is not to buy/sell items, but we all end up having miles/certificates/GC or other items that we want to sell. It would be great to have some kind of rating system, like ebay, so that we would know if the other person is honest or not

I like the idea just not sure about the logistics. Just a point, if a guy has a large number of posts that's usually enough for me to trust them.

To be perfectly honest I agree with the 3rd party idea. I had a ba mileage account stolen from me after I paid. All passwords etc got switched.

True...but it doesnt make sense to pay such fees for small transactions we do here like selling free hotel nights or club passes.

If the transaction is small, then I don't think it's worth worrying. I would look on post counts, and be ok. Bigger transactions, I would use something.

Here is what I am thinking.
Assume that A is selling a GC to B. Both A and B would PM me with their email address, confirm the basic sale terms and agree what would trigger the money to be released.

B would send me the funds plus a small fee via paypal or AP

Once the GC is transferred to B, both A and B would confirm that the money can be released and I would release it to A via paypal or AP.

I could get a few long time DDF members to vouch for me

What stops me from opening a couple a ddf accounts and maintaining them. They all vouch for me. Then the $2500 transaction cones thru and I keep it. Just sayin...

B can claim he didn't get the GC and A will lose out.

@bz
Its great that you'd like to help everyone out by offering such a service.

It doesn't seem like you realize the potential headache that comes along with the job.

What if person b says the GC had $50 balance instead of $80?

Are you going to verify each GC/item being flipped?
