I'm no expert here, but mark my words here:
Believe me that United, Continental,US and Delta are watching. If American gets away with the surcharge on BA, and BA charges on AA, it wont be long before the other U.S. based airlines.........
The situation with AA and BA is unique because AA never had access to BA TATL flights.
The fuel surcharge was a concession to BA in exchange for opening TATL flights.
I'm not sweating it...yet.

Im not a member of any non-US program , do you know if SkyTeams or Stars non-US Carriers charge their own members surcharges if they cash in for award tkts. If they do then they maybe Unfortunately  thers something to what Deal Guy said

a still now US programs didnt charge when tkting flights on their non-US Alliance partners and we all know that the Carriers will do almost anything if theres $$ to be had

I agree that here there was a specific reason, but if they get away with it here why not the other airlines. Of course I hope it doesn't happen, but if it does, say you first saw it here. ;) :D :P

ba.com does not yet seem to be applying the fuel surcharge (unfortunately, I don't want 12/1 - 12/8...but maybe i need to rethink so I can also get rid of my BA miles before their computer system changes...
What did you wind up doing?
Did you try calling back to see if perhaps you can find a supervisor not charging a fuel surcharge?
Maybe call the BA.com desk?

Someone removed my post, but I repost it here as I think people should be aware before buying AA miles.

A booking I had on hold before before Oct 1st went up with about $400 on top of the original price after Oct 1st.

It was a BA flight via LHR.
