Which Processor Should I Get?
« on: October 03, 2010, 01:29:10 PM »
I'm in the midst of making a decision on a desktop computer. I'm looking at two different processors and need help making a decision.

1. Intel® Core™ i3-540 processor(4MB Cache, 3.06GHz)
2. Intel® Core™ i5-750 processor(8MB Cache, 2.66GHz)

The i5 is $100 more than the i3, and all the other specs are exactly the same. I would be using the computer for regular, everyday use plus a little Photoshop, video editing etc.
Any suggestions?

The i5 is definitely better, I don't remember how offhand but there are advantages...

I know that it's better. The question is, is it worth paying $100 extra for it?

If you're using it for basic Photoshop and video editing (in addition to the regular things),
all you need is the i3. The i5 is faster and meant for heavier program usage. Although depending on your future plans (if your planning on having this one for a while) and you don't know how to load a new processor in by yourself, it might be wiser to invest in the better one now.

Aside from your usage and needs, it depends on how much money you're putting into this and how long you expect it to last for. If you're buying a higher-end machine, I'd definitely recommend the i5

The i5 will probably give you better performance, but if you don't need it you'll probably have slightly better battery life with the i3.

Edit: Here's an official comparison chart, but it's full of tech specs and won't tell you much unless you're a techie.

I came here to ask this question and thankfully I searched, because this thread is precisely what I wanted to ask.

My friend is looking for a basic laptop, primarily for typing. He doesn't need anything fancy but he does not want it freezing or going slow. Is there any reason to get an i5, or will an i3 be sufficient to avoid freezing and slowness?

(Again, it's primarily for typing.)

ETA: I'm exceedingly happy that I'm using my 2,000th post to help a friend of mine. What a way to hit a milestone...  :)

Ask your friend what secondary use he'll be using it for, you'll be surprised many times 'oh I also want it for adobe InDesign......'

He's a teacher. I think it's actually safe to say that he's only going to use it for typing. He definitely won't spend an extra $100 to get a better processor if it won't make a difference to typing abilities.

Only typing?!
The only times I've seen a person use a laptop ONLY for typing, was when it was too slow to do anything else.
Does he plan on using a browser? They are becoming bigger and bigger memory hogs.
And, unless you go deep into disabling startup bloatware programs (more than just disabling then in task manager), those things will add to "just for typing".
Most people I know kicked themselves for not getter a better computer. Not vice versa.

Why all the confusion?

A core i3 is enough for light use.
Over time the laptop will probably slow down, so if he wants it to last a while (get a desktop) I'd go for the i5.

Took me a second to realize the OP was in 2010 ;D

If it's very strictly kept to light use, no

I bought my laptop for typing my wife was teaching at that time, I told the seller I need it for teaching preparing sheets etc, I was very annoyed when I couldn't efficiently run visual studio/Android studio/mysql server, I don't blame anyone but myself.
