I'm assuming you mean suite nights thru the Hyatt CC. But how do the upgrades work. Is it possible to do it with other chains besides Hyatt.

Just did a similar trip as you are looking to do.. I suggest the Hyatt palm springs (all rooms are suites) & in LA you probably want to go to the SLS (SPG points).

Anyone have any experience using hotels.com through the UR portal? based on the 0.0175 valuation it doesn't make sense to transfer (in my case 60K points for a $500 hotel room) but the 5 points per $1 through hotels.com was intriguing.
Or is there a better way?

There isn't too much talk of the UR portal here, but I think that makes sense. If you were going to pay cash anyway at hotels.com or any site, why not just go through the portal and get 5x?
