I've been to Mike's, wolf and lamb, Abigaels, tierra sur, shallots, La Gandola (only the higher end ones).

The tasting menu at etc for under $100 (plus tip) is phenomenal both in terms of food and value.

    Top 5?

Of places I've been to, only Mike's is definitely better. And you can't get anything close to the amount of food for under $150 + tax/tip there.

Tierra sur might be better, but again, very pricey.

Also the byob element of etc is huge. I can do a 5 course tasting x2 with a bottle of wine for $250 all in. Very few other places like that.

They pick items from the main menu, occasionally giving you something off menu. The portions in the 5 course work out to 2 small apps each, and 2 half-size entrée portions, and dessert. You can give them likes and dislikes. I think all the times I've done it, the entrées have been 2 different steaks. Certainly at least 1 course will be steak.

ETC is great, particularly the food.  But it is isn't even in top 10 or 15 as far as ambiance and service. I don't believe it's even top 5 in food.

Easily rated ahead of it are:

    --Shallot's
    --Barnea
    --Doma
    --Harbor Bistro
    --Reserve Cut

I suppose reasonable minds can differ, but I've been to both probably 10x and Shallots is considerably better IMO.

Big shallots fan. I think Mike's is overrated.
Candidly, for its size, I think Teaneck's restaurants are pretty weak.  In a head-to-head with Crown Heights for example, it loses out by a wide margin.
    Surprised by this take.

Having lived in both Chicago and New Jersey shallots is overrated
My unpopular opinion is that both Shallot's and La Gandola (LA) are overrated and stand out due to lack of better options in their respective locations. But in terms of NYC comparisons, they are both like Abigaels (fine dining but lacking elements to bring them over the top).

I haven't been everywhere, but I've only been blown away by 3 places in the fine dining category - Mike's, Tierra Sur, and etc.

When I make it to RC, Barnea, and UN Plaza, I'll happily adjust my rankings accordingly.
