The problem may be more the underlying attitudes that got them into the mess than the mess itself
I got myself into huge cc debt and someone who I'm forever grateful to help me pull out.
I'm not a spendrift, I just spent a long time on a very profitable contract that didn't pan out, I ignored my cards and was paying 600 a month in interest
Now I bust my butt every month to pay the interest free principal transfer.
I drive the cheapest car I could lease, my phone is old, I try not to drink anything but cheap good wine lol and my biggest expenses are travel related mostly funded by points from healthy churn.
And looking back, I don't think anyone should get married without a clear handle on finances..
I know when I iyh marry I will approach 1 friend who is a top CPA and a group of friends who are very successful investor's and have them invest my wedding funds as a trust for my kids education.
I've thought it out and recognized priorities
