How does this compare to other budgeting apps?

Does the forums have a referral link?

I'm a massive fan (diehard user for 4+ years) and I have a referral link if you want ;)

You need to be an active user to have a referral link. Dunno if JJ or Dan use it...

What do you like about it, do you find certain features  unique that you can't find in other places?

I do envelope budgeting and when I started I found YNAB to be the best. In subsequent years there have been competitors, most notably Actual (https://actualbudget.com), but I've stuck with YNAB because I've had no reason to switch.

Envelope budgeting is very different than expense tracking (like mint.com does) - it enables you to be mindful of your spending and to plan ahead for future expenses (eg Yom Tov).

I still use Mint extensively in order to have a 1 stop place to view all my transactions - very useful for DDFers who have tens of accounts. But I do not use it for budgeting.

So your saying they really go together?

Is a place that will both in one?

No you don't really need Mint since YNAB can connect to your bank automatically. I personally don't use the automatic connection to the bank since manually entering the expenses makes me be more mindful about each transaction. But that's just my personal usage - most people use the bank connections.

Budget maaser as a variable expense. $100 comes in, budget $10 to maaser immediately.

That's a good question, might be easier if you're budgeting a month ahead, but I'm not sure. Not experienced in this scenario :(

What do you mean?
I personally get paid regularly so I don't have experience budgeting with a variable income. But like Yehuda57 said - it should work the same: you get paid $100, budget $90 to e.g. Groceries and $10 to Charity/Maaser.
