I would say absolutely do not use 1and1, they are hands down the worst I've ever dealt with. (maybe they've gotten better in the past few years, I don't know)

Some people like godaddy.com, others hate them. I myself never had any major issues with them but I personally  dislike their system so I try not to use them.

I've been using ipower.com for some of my things for almost ten years, I haven't had any serious problems with them. (I think they're part of a big company which runs hosting under a bunch of different names)

I know a lot of people like bluehost.com and hostgator.com though I personally never really used either one much.

I had and hated bluehost and 1and1.

I liked Mediatemple before they started having problems with security issues on WP blogs.

I seem to remember you saying at some point that you like bluehost?
(maybe you liked them initially then got fed up?)

They started making DD go really really slow due to traffic.
1and1 was much faster, but they had way too much downtime.

Well Apparently I was wrong, if you ever did say that you liked bluehost I can't find it anywhere...
the closest I found is that you said they're "considered quite reliable." :)

I use startlogic and am generally happy with them for small sites. For sites that need to be faster I use http://mapletime.com which has great customer service

I used 1&1 and couldn't stand them

And I am bishita against go daddy because of their advertising. I dont like their site even withouit the pritzus as well

Sounds like you're looking for something like volusion or yahoo stores, not hosting.
-You could also get hosting and use an open source ecommerce platform like oscommerce or magento, but that requires some technical know-how to do properly.

Dan - if you're not using MT any more, who are you using to host WP blog? I am looking for host for 2 WP blogs and was seriously considering MT.....

I'm still on MT.  Not happy with them, but I'm not sure of a better host.

If you would, please, elaborate about what you are not happy with. Thanks.

Security issues and paying high-traffic overage fees.

paying high-traffic overage fees.

Does this mean if we're (collectively) less active on the forums DD saves $$$? :P

It would save even more money if I just turned off the forums ;)
Overages caused by the forums 2 months ago were $70 (on top of the $20 hosting fee).
I turned on site caching after that and didn't go over last month but this month we'll probably be $20 over.

We tried using caching for the forum, but that was causing those error messages.

I followed the caching discussion on the 'new forum' thread.

Why stop at the forums? close down the whole site and you'll save even more money :)

Well the site itself isn't going over the allotted GPU's, especially now that I'm using SuperCache.
And the site is b"h profitable, the forums-not so much...

Although I may switch to a more expensive dedicated virtual plan which has no GPU limit, but does have a CPU limit...not sure if that will be better or worse though.

1. I assume the forums help bring traffic to the profitable part of the site.
2. I always wondered why you don't have any ads here in the forums...

Your two points almost seem contradictory: If #1 is true, who needs #2?
