I view the forums as something of a public service offered by Dansdeals.com.

Frankly I don't understand the technical workings of the forum as I do on the main site, which is why Eli is in charge of the tech stuff here.

It would be nice if I can find a way to monetize it enough to at least cover its own cost, maybe even with Adsense or something of the like, but either way there's no way I would just turn off the excellent community that Eli, I, and the 1,832 other members have built.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Your two points almost seem contradictory: If #1 is true, who needs #2?
az gut iz gut iz besser nit besser?

Just because they help the overall site traffic doesn't mean they shouldn't be as profitable as possible in their own right.

(although I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that most of Dan's revenue is not from the ads, but that's a whole different story...)

It seems like you're looking at it all wrong here. The question is not what does the system have to offer, the question is what you want to do here. I think it's safe to assume that just about anything can be made to work as long as you know what you want...

Why are you so insistent on this site having ads? I haven't heard Dan complain once that DDF is costing him too much and he's considering shutting down the forums.

Maybe i could've been clearer here. I was talking in general, not just about ads. I think there's a lot of potential here for the site to be so much more than it is right now.

I wasn't insisting on anything, just making an observation...

I was running a similar site, with 1000+ members, and I had implemented adsense (which are relevant adds), in a nice way, blending in almost if it were a post.
It placed itself between the first and second post, and skipping 5 post hereafter.

The income generated, didn't justify the cheapness/annoyance brought upon the site.

For some reason, on my regular sites (not forum), the adds generated proportionally much more.

Let's look at the travel section.
With all the great information here on this forum, is it being presented in the best possible way? Can you think of any ways of making the info more accessible and user friendly?

If somebody wants information about a city, is reading through pages and pages of posts, often with the discussion going in many directions at once really the best system?

One idea that was mentioned here previously is incorporating a wiki. I think that's a great idea and a big step in the right direction. However, I do think there's so much more than that which can be done.
I think I'm allergic to posting my ideas out in the open, I just can't bring myself to do it... (hey I might decide to start a competing site :))) so I'll let you figure out on your own how you think it can be improved.

I guess what I was trying to say to Dan in my earlier post was: You can't limit yourself to what the forum software can or can't do, you gotta figure out how to have the site reach it's maximum potential and I'm sure you can make it work technically.

Looking for a solid good hosting site for a mostly static Website with a small Blog on the side. I currently use 1and1 and can't take them.

Requirements:

  • Good up-time
  • Fairly Cheap
  • Email hosting including MS Exchange (for Thunderbird)
  • English speaking customer service :)

What would be the recommended host for a commerce website with minimal traffic initially?
Was going to use 1&1, until I read this thread...

Been using Rackspace for the last few years and they are very very reliable. Problem is, they are expensive!
We have a dedicated server and a firewall with them. It's about 730 per month now and we want a lower price. Is godaddy reliable?
Specs of the server don't have to be high end.. Thanks

what's your opinion  about hostmonster shared $14.49

what did you do
i think Thunderbird isn't dependent on MS exchange, but rather it's compatible, is it correct?
if yes why would you need/want MS exchange
