If you like iPhones go for it. They tend to cost the most.
But you don't have to get the 5S you can get the 5 or 5C for much cheaper.

And if you don't buy an iphone or the NEWEST phone it's for sure saving a lot. For example You can buy an HTC one for well under $400 right now. And a Nexus 5.
The windows phones are even cheaper ( thought not as great. )
It can potentially save you a lot of money.
With the family plan these phones are 50-100$- which saves me $300 right there.
And IMO they don't last more then two years,
So your not saving THAT much,
And if you need more the one gb Internet- not sure saving at all...

it's the same as pre-paid versus contract. Basically with this your on a prepaid plan.cheaper but no subsidies.

Not sure what you mean, with the regular (contracted) plans you pay up front for the phone plus the added monthly cost (up to $25 more) whether you got a new phone or not. Here you pay less for the plan, and you only pay for a phone if you get one and only how much that phone is worth.

if a contracted line starts the framily it seems that they are waiving the additional cost and you are able to leave..
as long as you didnt just get the phone in the last few weeks. CMIIW

It's not
It seems as though anything pertaining to this plan needs to be done in store. Online and phone reps don't seem to know as much as the store folk

Gotcha. I have to decide if it's worth losing my grandfathered plan which has gotten worse recently due to discount being removed.
