ftfy.

It's pretty funny the probably #1 reason for youths going otd isn't listed here, and it's not abuse as a kid ftr.

Many people who go OTD definitely use that excuse, though I'm not entirely convinced that it's always true. Nobody is brought up in a perfect environment. Nobody grows up with perfect parents, teachers, counselors and friends. Everyone goes through some abuse growing up, someone is going to be mean to you, or bully you, or put you down during your childhood years.

Oddly, two classmates of mine, brilliant guys, went OTD because they had issues with their belief in G-d. They probably know more Talmud and Halacha than most people. Both of these guys maintain a strong connection with their families and friends.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used to start a religious discussion.

I'd say with some confidence that if it weren't for the easy way out, being lazy, and taivos they'd still be frum.

Lots of people say they are going off because they have hashkafic issues but I found more often than not something else is the real drive behind those hashkafic issues.

How do you explain those who follow Halacha but don't believe?

Is that who we were talking about? Or you are asking a different question than what we are discussing above?

I think that's a different topic for a different thread. Feel free to start it.

There's a huge difference between an imperfect environment and abuse.
I can't help but believe the countless therapists and others working in this field that claim abuse is a very significant factor if not the most.

There is no question that people who have severely negative emotional experience of any kind will find it easier to leave. Some get over it; some don't. But if somebody was exposed to really emotionally unhealthy stuff, it definitely presents a challenge to their staying in the fold. I believe that to some extent we ALL go through this at some point or even a few points.

Drinking the wine or grape juice from Havdala.
That's the last thing I want after eating a whole Shabbos.
