best use of points/credit cards to rent a car

What is the best way (economical) way of renting a car in the US (example approx 14 days pick up at newark airport and drop off at newark airport)

I have AMEX points, Ultimate rewards, thank you points or is best to purchase car rental via sites such as priceline and pay with a card like the Barclay's card and get reimbursed

Any consensus??? thoughts??

I did it once but it still costed me more than I expected in cash. Wasn't a good deal. I think it was budget or dollar with AA.

I tuink you're better off finding a good deal on a rental.

I've found amazing deals at carrentals.com. Don't think they're so good for last minute though. A month or two i think is the sweet spot. I booked a rental in LA this year for $9 a day. Was $11 per day but kept checking and rebooked when it went down. Even the lady at Hertz was amazed at my price.

AAdvantage and any other mileage programs that work the same way will use miles to pay the base rate but you'll still have to pay taxes and fees when you return the car. Especially at an airport, this can be a significant amount.
