Old Checks
« on: January 20, 2014, 01:36:02 PM »
I found a old check i forgot to cash (from 2010). I cant call the person and ask them to give me a new one. Should i try to cash it? It is only $50 it might not be worth it since ot might bounce.

can not offer much help-- but why not go into a BA bank and ask if account is still open -- would not show them check --- give them any reason u can think of --why asking if open -- I would stress you are  not interested in his balance --- but even if still opened they can refuse to honor

not sure if would work or worth the effort -- open a savings account at BA n use check as first deposit

Why not?
his point is to ask teller about account status.. If they see check is years old they won't bother...

+1

also not so sure worth the hassle to open a bank  acct ---- will they open with $50 -- or need to add $ to reach min  to open --- at one time required to keep min or charged a fee ---

i once deposited a check after  "not valid"  after "date written on check -- my bank accepted  cerdited my account and a few days later was notified rejected by issuing bank

It's best if you can verify with the bank it's drawn on if the account is open and if there is sufficient balance. After doing so, try depositing the check to your own account at a bank that does not charge for deposited checks returned unpaid, using a method that will not involve scrutiny by a teller, such as remote deposit by scanner or mobile phone app or the ATM. This way, you have nothing to lose if it is not paid.
