Should I book a US ticket now? Or do you think it will hold. Don't want to lose 60,000 points even though my current plans are up in the air.

For now US doesn't charge a YQ on any tickets.  I don't think ANA will charge YQ for them unless US starts charging a YQ.

USAirways may actually last.  CO/UA and VS both charge YQ on paid tickets, so that's probably what ANA is charging now.  US doesn't so ANA can't pull one out of thin air.

Search EWR-TLV on ITA.  You'll see in the fare details that CO charges a $514 YQ.  CO doesn't charge that on award tickets, but ANA does have the right to charge it if they want.

US does not charge any YQ for that EWR-TLV search.

Shame though, ANA miles just went way down in value!  Consequently US miles (a SPG transfer partner, often with bonuses available) just went up as they still remain a good SPG conduit for YQ-free Star Alliance tickets.
US is also a partner of VS and they charge YQ, no?

It's a good question.
Virgin, BMI, and Lufthansa are known for charging high YQs.  If someone has those miles check about booking a US ticket and let us know if they charge a YQ.

Makes sense; AA charges more for BA flights across the Atlantic.

AA charges more for BA flights than AA charges for AA flights.
It very well may even be more than BA charges for BA flight.

Israel for 35k miles r/t
« Reply #78 on: October 30, 2012, 07:52:01 PM »
"- If you’re doing a longer trip to that region from New York, the actual best choice is to use LAN kilometers to fly to Amman, Jordan, on Royal Jordanian. LAN only charges the equivalent of 35,000 miles roundtrip in coach for the nonstop flight to Amman (100,000 in business class). You can transfer Starwood points to LAN, meaning it’s only 30,000 Starwood points for a roundtrip ticket to Jordan. That’s a great deal. To check availability I would call American Airlines, since LAN’s call center can be hit-or-miss (I’m being generous). You could add on a leg from Amman to Tel Aviv for 6,000 miles roundtrip (12,000 LAN Kilometers)." http://www.onlinetravelreview.com/

Anyone tried flying with them?

Nothing new there, see OP from 2010 or this post: http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/23168
People have done it.  The 35K number is misleading at best.
