Printed label from ebay post office says it's illegal
« on: January 13, 2014, 02:32:26 PM »
I printed a first class label on ebay,  I put it on a letter.  Post office on coney island and I,  didn't want to accept it and claimed first class doesn't have tracking only priority and I was supposed to ship priority. He furthermore said,  it says on it first class package and I put the label on an envelope,  envelope isn't package.

This is what happens. Take it back and go to a different window.

Yes it has to be at least 3/4" thick to be considered a package. Letters can't have tracking. So just repackage it into a padded envelope and you're good.

I dropped it into box,  would it come back?

Why does it need to be thick?

It's Postal regulation. No point in trying to figure out the reasoning behind it..
They'll probably deliver it anyway. Small chance they may return it to you. Follow the tracking :)

This post office is known for it's long lines, don't care about anybody and they make their own rules.

Why would you even go to the post office in the first place and not put it in the box.
Btw, if you print your own shipping the 13oz limit for blue box doesnt apply, and u can even drop off international packages if the lable prints a customs stamp.

I would use a box from a different zip code/post office simply because the staff in that branch may already have a personal issue with this package believe it or not.

I always just stick letters in the box with package labels. Use that fit warranties and the like all the time, no problem.

You can't use the same label because they tracked the history through the number on the label and when they scan it, it will show up as being returned to sender.

Also IME they will in general give you a hard time when you put a first class label that you printed on an envelope bec letters do not get tracking numbers that way only packages do - you usually have to send it via registered mail in order to have a letter tracked. IMHO you should put the letter in a new envelope, go to the post office and send it via registered mail (IIRC) to get it tracked. If the issue is you want it to get there ASAP, put it in a flat rate priority mail envelope (which you can get at the post office as well) and that will automatically include tracking information (which they will give you once you pay for it - costs about $5.60)
