Yeshivos is a bad example. If someone is asking for money because they choose to learn, it doesn't matter whether they support secular education or not, your money is supporting the learning, not the 'not going to college'. If however they can't make a living and the only reason is because they refuse to go to college, then maybe I can see the irony.

Basically what you're saying is that the reason they're in the position of asking for your support is because of their shita of not going to college. Doesn't sound right when put that way, but that's what it comes down to.

its not a bad example bc societies should be self supporting.

Would be interesting if they tried.

Id like to raise money for my yeshiva.

It has one the largest number of bochrim learning on a daily basis in the country
It prolific rabbanim who write and are very highly regarded.
It is one of the oldest yeshivas in America, thus withstanding the test of time.
Unfortunately, its located in manhattan, so its very expensive to house the bochrim - hence we need your support.
Please help support Yeshivas Rabeinu Yitchak Elchanan.

Thanks,

Meant to post it, was the first thing I thought of when I read the thread.  That response created quite a stir in the jewish media back then.
Yaya.
iirc the rabbonim of the ou met with him and he said that he has never has such a response to anything he wrote and after speaking to many rabbis he still thinks he made the right choice.

Of course Halacha doesn't have to play a role in his decision because he is only discussing ethics ;)

The link you probably wanted to place would be: https://secure3.convio.net/yu/site/Donation2?idb=255146354&df_id=1409&1409.donation=form1&idb=0
That would be a link for RIETS, not the University as a whole.

He was making a joke that he doesn't know what M&M's are because he's never eaten them.

There is a law that Jews can only eat milk (and it's derivatives) if the milking was supervised by a Jew. This is known as Chalav Yisroel. As such many members here have never had an M&M. Rav Moshe Feinstein is famous for giving a heter because of government supervision.

Love folks that don't trust our gov't for anything but for this they manage to trust. Even though the gov't themselves have admitted they do no testing or supervision on it and can barely stop horse and cat meat from being sold as beef.

Rav Scheinberg is quoted as having said that today its even safer because if a company gets caught they go out of business and that fear will keep them from doing something shady.

I must have missed where Ikea went out of business for serving horseballs instead of meatballs.
Or where any other company that cuts a corner went out of business.

The general public is very forgiving as it's not that big of a deal for most people that MCDs used pig lard for their fries instead of veggie oil.

Have to add this to my thread of things that will definitely elicit a response from Dan.
