Won't call it sheltered, just never listened or took interest in non Jewish music.
But you can call it what you want... ;D
Most don't have to take an interest in NJM to walk in a mall or play pool in poolhall

My point wasn't that I didn't realize until then that those kind of songs exist. Of course I did I'm not THAT stupid.
My point really was that I was kind of shocked that he wasn't embarrassed to turn it on....
Anyways I guess it didn't really have much to do with the conversation..
Btw this song I'm referring to would never be played in a mall.

What makes music jewish?
To me, if it's sold in a judaica store....

Not meaning to say that judaica store is what makes it Jewish, just that is what I end up listening to.

That's ambiguous, where do you draw the line?
In one yeshiva I went to the rule we could only listen to music from someone jewish who had a beard.
Along came Matisyahu...

Knew this was coming.
That's why I left it at what's sold in a judaica store.

I always felt this forum was a friendlier place and for the most part it is. When it comes to certain subjects you guys/gals make FWF/FT look like childs play.

I participate in many forums unrelated to travel and this forum is clearly the unfriendliest.

What makes music jewish?

It would depend on the era and location. Jewish music is America 2014 doesn't sound anything like Jewish music in Europe 1920s.

In all honesty, im curious about this.

Does the hardcore yeshivish/chareidi crowd really view MO in the same light as reform jews (or perhaps worse)?

When in YU, it always bothered me when people, who diabolically oppose YU and would completely flip if their child chose to go there, came to collect money for their yeshiva in the YU minyanim.

If people really view us as ashamed of Judaism or reformed, it should extend to our wallets.

I really hope most folk dont agree with churnbabychurn, but the yeshivish/chareidi, what is your thought on MO? are we reformed? perverse? worse bc we think we are ortho but really just reform?

Now let's ask a question... oooh, this could be taken the wrong way...

To the "yeshivisher" types who feel that MO relies on heterim, I am honestly asking... why do you feel comfortable shaving? I know, I know, your nizhar in kemach yoshon... you are a "chareidisher Yid." But setting aside labels and just focussing on ONE mitzvah, why is a Litvisher guy who would never shake hands but would shave off his beard every morning different (in your mind) than someone else who also relies regularly on heterim?

I am honestly asking. No disrespect intended.

I think it all boils down to:
...don't you know anyone who keeps less then you isn't religious and those who keep more are fanatics?

What makes music jewish?

I heard from a Rav that if the music makes you move back and forth (shukeling), it's Jewish. If it makes you move side to side, it's not.

Everyone moves back and forth at a Matisyahu concert.  And most of them are high.

Don't feel bad. CBC and others made it pretty clear that being chabad is as bad it gets, so you're at least 1 step up on me ;)
