When booking a hotel is there any advantage to book thru the hotel or thru priceline or any other site?

When booking through the hotel it helps for acquiring nights toward status. Also they have more options for not paying in advance. Various sites also have the option to not pay in advance while others require payment immediately.

Sometimes the 3rd party sites are cheaper than the hotels.

When booking through Kayak for example, regardless of which hotel chain you book you get points towards free nights.

Has anyone ever booked a hotel through Travelpony? They currently have a promotion to sign up and receive $35 plus coupon code KATE50 takes an extra $50 off a booking of $200 or more. Was wondering if anyone had any experience with this?
